HELP! We have a bunch of deer that have been hanging around our yard this past winter and now that it is planting season, they need to be evicted! What are some "natural" ways to get rid of them so they don't eat the garden? We won't shoot them, so don't throw that one at me! I also don't want to spray chemicals on my vegetables. That is the biggest reason we are growing them ourselves. A fence is also not a practical solution. Thanks for your help!
What are some natural ways to keep deer out of a vegetable garden?
We purchased cougar scat from a local zoo. (Who knew that poo could be so expensive? It was sold by the pound!) We gave it to my husband's mother for her garden. She thinks that it is working well.
You don't have to actually use the cougar feces, you can also purchase urine odor stuff. The important thing is that the animal must be a natural deer predator.
Reply:sounds like you want to go to heaven but dont want to die...you can try soap (hear dial works) , hair ,as mentioned , or dried blood...i would pound some stakes in the ground and just run some bailing twine around the perimeter of your garden and hang tin pie plates...
Reply:You've eliminated all the solutions....an organic farmer friend of mine finally had to break down and put up a 6' fence......he didn't want to either.
Reply:My mother puts out bars of unwrapped Coast or Irish Spring soap and says it works fairly well. I don't think anything is perfect except a fence.
Reply:A friend of mine who lives in the country had the same problem. She solved it by going to her beauty salon and getting bags of the human hair that they sweep up off the floor and scattering it around her garden. I think she goes every month or two to refresh it. It may sound a little gross but she swears it works.
Reply:Nothing worked for me except an 8' chain link fence (sold by the panel as dog kennel) topped with another 2' We even had them come up on the patio to nibble away potted plants. Year around, they eat our foundation plantings.
A dog might keep them away, but only if it has the run of the garden. They might quickly learn where the end of the dog's lead is.
