I have a puppy a breed of a Labrador eating our leaves in our garden.

Dogs commonly eat grass, and there are several explanations that have been offered for this behavior. One, wild canids (e.g., wolves and fox) eat all of an animal when they catch it. Since they eat many herbivores (plant-eating animals), they end up eating a lot of grasses and plants that were in the intestines of these animals. In addition, they have been known to eat certain berries and other plant material. Dogs then, may eat grass because, in reality, it is a normal part of their diet.



Many times, dogs will vomit after eating grass. Did they eat grass to make them vomit? Or did they vomit because they ate grass? It is a mystery, but it seems that some dogs may eat vegetation when they have an upset stomach.



The third reason - they just like it. Some dogs have certain species of grass or plant material that they will search out and eat. We know a beagle who can pick raspberries faster than his owner.

Reply:i don't know about other dogs but i know for sure labs and chow eat leaves when they have atte something bad or their stomach is upset. it cleans out there system like prune juice
Reply:mine does the same thing! i was a little worried due to the pesticide killer in the yard but she seems fine.....i think its just puppies being puppies they explore with their mouths like human babies do

My 9-month old chocolate loves poop - racoon poop, goose poop, cat poop, other dog's poop, her own poop. She is a digger, too, and everybody tells me to put her poop in the holes - to her, it's like I'm gathering up and putting it in one spot for her to snack on - she doesn't have to search for it.



Other things my lab loves eating - tall grass, short grass, paper, fuzz (from clothes, vacuum, pockets), bugs.

Reply:I have a lab and we have raised quite a few. I LOVE THEM TO DEATH however they will eat anything and everything. Advice never leave bicyles, shoes, cords, nothing like that around. The puppy will hopefully grow out of it eventually but you may want to look into investing in an underground fence. You simply buy a kit, put the wire slighty under the ground fencing in an area you wont mind the dog being, place the collar on the dog and give him a few lessons on where not to go. We put the fence around our garden....and if you train the dog by where you put the flags then eventually it will see the signs as hey im not suppose to go there and when you have a problem with the dog messing something up stick you a couple of flags in the ground.

Puppies are insane... They will eat whatever strikes their fancy...



Leaves, shoes, tree bark, pants, the leg of a chair, cat poo, their own poo...



They seem to think that everything tastes really good...



CHeck around and make sure that nothing he is eating is poisonous then just let him do what makes him happy!

Reply:Look up what kind of plant it is to make sure that it is not toxic to dogs! Poinsettia leaves are very tasty but they are toxic so that is one example of a plant that is bad for dogs. If your plant comes up clean, don't worry about it because usually dogs know what their system's need.
Reply:He's just curious. He may get a case of the runs if he eats too many of those, though.
