I'm looking for any ideas that would assist me in growing a garden.

What are some basic essentials needed to start a garden?
Intellectually you need to ascertain what type of garden goes well with your situation, your type of soil, sun placement, weather, and space.

Physically you will need a trowel, shovel, hose, and seeds or seedlings.

A good source to help you start a garden is Garden Web. Go into the forums and choose what you are interested in and start reading!
Reply:You will need to decide what you want to grow, some plants cant take full sun, while other need it.Good fertile dirt is a must.Different plants need different acidity of soil.It is hard to give advice when you dont even say whether it is a flower or vegatable garden.
Reply:The site below will guide you through every aspect of gardening from plans, soil prep, compost to guides for all vegetables, herbs fruits etc.
Reply:Turn a good size area of soil over and mix a huge bag of peat moss and a huge bag of compost into the dirt mixing real good. Water it down and then follow the directions either on the seed packages or if you are buying plants that are already started from a nursery make sure they have labels on them that inform you of how deep to plant and the spacing, etc.. Maybe once a week water with some Miracle Grow. My Garden does great! Oh yeah, and if you have trouble with birds or other animals getting in your garden buy one of those fake owls or something that moves to scare them off. I have a Gargoyle made of resin in mine and I put glow in the dark paint on it's fangs and claws and eyes. Looks scarey at night. But it won't fool them for long! Haha! Good Luck! As soon as you grow something edible you'll be hooked on your garden! :)
Reply:You first have to decide how much space you can devote to your garden %26amp; what your plan will be. It really is best to diagram it out -- will you be making raised beds for decorative use, or will you be growing herbs or veggies?

Evaluate sun exposure in each of your desired locations- this will largely determine what you can put there. Then, visit a local nursery or co-op to see what works well in your climate.
Reply:Without other info, the best advice I could give is regarding your soil. Making a raised bed with a good garden mix is probably your best start. The plants or vegetables you choose would then be based on your location, time of planting, and the amount of sun or shade.

Go to your local home store or nursery. The plants offered for sale will be typically be set for your location and time of year. You can then easily read the tags for determine light and watering requirements. If you see an "All America Winnner" you know it will be particularly easy to grow.
