Is it a bad time to lay turf in my garden?

I want to lay to turf in my garden but a friend as told me not to just yet incase we get a frost...will the frost damage newly layed turf?

Is it a bad time to lay turf in my garden?
We did ours last week.
Reply:I did mine over a week ago now. I have also scattered seeds about the same time. My hanging baskets have been done and beginning to show signs of growth. My Calla Lillie's are pushing up through the soil and the first seedlings are coming through. And I live up here in Bolton!.

So yes, go for it!!!.
Reply:Grass is hardy!! It's a good time right now (spring) go for it.
Reply:yes it will

lay yourself in bed

untill the sun comes out!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:Yes it is a very bad time ... a lot of lawns being laid around the new Tesco's in Shrewsbury are all dieing because of the lack of water and the sun during the day.
Reply:Don't worry about frost - but do not lay turf in wet weather. Just make sure that the ground is well prepared and allowed to settle for a bit before you lay it. Well prepared ground is THE most important part of laying turf.
Reply:That partially depends where you are but I'd start laying it down pretty soon. You definitely don't want to lay it down in the middle of summer. They laid my sod down for my new house right during the hottest portion of summer and 3 years later I'm still trying to get it to grow descent. If they'd waited a few more weeks till it cooled down it would have been totally fine. However my backyard which I sowed in grass seed just a few weeks later after it cooled looks as well kept as Pebble Beach golf course.

The frost could hurt it a little bit, but not a whole lot. What is really going to matter are the roots. If the roots get frozen then your grass will really hurt. And with as warm as it is now, I don't think the roots will get frozen. Go ahead and lay your sod down. It needs to get an early start anyhow. And make sure to fertilize it, keep it watered but not overwatered, and spread some pelletized lime, pelletized gypsum, and a little epsom salts (for magnesium) mixed in with the two on the lawn. Most people fertilize but forget or don't know to add lime, gypsum, and magnesium.

You want to fertilize good in the spring and fall. That is when your grass grows. It grows little in the summer due to the heat and you want to only lightly fertilize in the summer or you'll dry out and burn your lawn. The best time to weed is in the fall.
Reply:you are safe to lay turf- but dont water after midday
Reply:frost does not affect grass growing and we wont get much in the line of frost now anyway...a guy laid turf on the garden here (UK) two months ago and turf farms work all year round growing and cutting
Reply:Chances of frost now are very slim, you should be ok to go ahead, but it may grow better if you leave it for another week or 2.
Reply:It really depends on which area of the country you are and whether you are likley to get any frost there! Really though, you should be ok - this is the growing period and ideal to get the grass established before summers' heat which can be damaging to new growth. Make sure you water plenty and feed weekly.
Reply:Frost doesn't actually harm turf/ grass too much, if you do get frost you should try to stay off the grass as where you walk could become burned, if the soles of your feet are warmer than the ground temperature, the grass will recover quite quickly.
