I have them growing in the one part of my yard. It's small, with bright green leaves that have very sharp prickly thorns under the leaves, and on the stems. It also grown what look like little tiny watermelons, although the are only the size of grapes. It seems to spread by runners. They have grown right up thru the weedblocker fabric I put down this year when I redid the garden. Nearly impossible to pull out, even while wearing leather gloves cause the thorns poke right thru the leather!
What is this weed growing in my garden?
I believe your thorny weed may be horse nettle. It's very persistent, and you're right about the thorns going right through leather gloves! Nasty, nasty weed. If you're not averse to using chemicals, RoundUp will eliminate it if applied properly.
I've posted a link where you'll find info on eliminating weeds.
That weedblocker fabric is pretty useless stuff, isn't it!
Reply:Could be a weed called prickley lettuce or some type of thistle.
Reply:If you can post a picture or tell us what zone you are in that might help a little bit. Not every place can have the same thing growing. So I cant help you on this one.
Reply:Sounds like something from the nightshade family. Very poisonous, so be careful!
Reply:with the type of fruit you descibed it could be your dreaded paddy melons.if squashed they do indeed look like melon seeds.they have a distinct smell.do they have tiny thorns down the stripes? to rid of these pull them out and dispose of in the garbage and not the compost
