What is the best time of year to garden in northeastern New York?
Gardening is done all year long, our tasks are just spread out over the full year. Here is a list of early spring tasks:
Plant early spring vegetables and fruits. March Tasks
These include spinach, lettuces, peas, and leeks as well as sweet peas.
Take a little time to prepare the vegetable garden soil for planting. The addition of well-rotted manure, processed manure, peat moss or compost are good additives for building compost humus in the soil.
Peas and sweet peas may be planted right now directly into the soil, as well as perennial vegetables like Asparagus, Rhubarb, Horseradish and artichokes.
Eggplant, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, celery, leeks, onions, early potatoes, and radish seeds may be planted in the garden about mid month.
Spinach, chard, cabbage, and other hardy vegetables can be seeded or set out late in the month.
Plant blueberries, currants, loganberries, boysenberries, grapes, and fruit trees this month.
Add some manure around your Rhubarb.
It is also time to start tomatoes, lettuce, and many other vegetables from seed inside.
Fruits and veggies for April Tasks
After months of wanting to do something in the garden, now it’s time to get out and get going. This is very busy month so let’s get organized to help get as much done as possible.
Continue to control weeds and aerate the soil by cultivating between the rows of plants.
April is still great time to select and plant fruit trees and berry plants. Fruits and berries do best when planted where they will get full sun.
It is still a good time to plant perennial vegetables like asparagus, rhubarb, horseradish, etc. If you didn’t get these earlier go ahead and plant peas, carrots, beets, spinach, cauliflower, cabbage, etc. Root crops like potatoes, radishes, parsnips and onions can be planted at anytime. Late this month you can plant beans and corn. Warmer weather crops like tomatoes; squash, cucumbers and peppers should not be planted until May after your last frost date.
As your direct-seeded crops sprout, be sure to thin them out. Over crowding will cause fewer crops in the end.

Reply:Mid May, after your last frost date. Find a couple of local garden centers or farm stores and ask them about what is a good time for your area, and what you might need. Some plants need a long growing season (some pumpkins, watermelons, corn etc.) so if you are going to use seed you want to check your first frost dates, too.
Even if you plant a bit before your last frost date if you cover them then many won't be fazed by the cold. Have fun gardening.
Reply:may would be the best time when you buy your seeds it usualy says on the back of the packets when is the best time to plant so follow the back of the seed packets.
