Are pressure treated timbers ok for use in a garden?

We had just bought some from Home Depot as they said they we "good for use in gardens". Now I am reading that it may not be the case as the chemicals may leach into the soil. We are building a square foot garden 4x16 and I called them and they told me that if I don't plant near the wood I should be ok. But seriously, should I even take the chance?

No, don't take the chance.

Think of all the toxic chemicals that will leach into the food you will eat from your garden. It doesn't take long for the soil to become contaminated, what with the watering, rainfall and digging around the plants.

No doubt they told you it was safe because they want to sell the product.
