I want to start a small garden about 10 x 12 in my back yard. Potatoes, onions, bell peppers, tomatoes are my main choices do these need to be planted at the same time?
When is the right time of year to plant a vegetable garden?
You can plant your entire garden at the same time. They will of course be ready at different times but only slightly, and you will be able to tell by sight what is ready and what needs a little more time. You should not plant your garden any sooner than May 24th long weekend. You may get another frost and if that happens you may lose some of your more tender plants. You can also put small buckets over the plant at night time which will protect it from the cold.
Reply:they don't need to be planted at the same time, but as far as when to plant, it depends on where you live. if you get seed packs they normally have proper times for the different regions of the US on the back, but about a week after the last frost is a good rule of thumb. and as far as the potatoes, you would be better served by planting them in a large garbage can so that you can harvest them easier
Reply:Planting should occur when all risk of frost has passed.
While you CAN plant them all at the same time, you certainly don't NEED to do so. Tubers are going to grow slower than tomatoes %26amp; peppers, and I honestly don't know that much about onions.
YOu can always start the seedlings (if you're starting from seeds) about 6 weeks prior to last frost, by potting them indoors %26amp; transferring them outside when weather is good.
Reply:It depends on your climate. Also, you plant different vegetables at different times. Your state if you are in the U.S. probably has a planting calendar on it's Extention Service website. Mine does. Check the web. Good luck.
Reply:may would be the right time of year to plant the seeds.look on the back of the seed packets it will tell you the best time to plant in your area.
