How long does horse manure need to sit before you throw it in the garden?

We want to plant a garden in an old horse pasture, but not too sure if the manure has sat there long enough that it will not burn. Thanks

Reply:I have used horse manure in gardens. It is not the high nitrogen manure that cow or sheep is; so, unless it is fresh from the source (like this week) you should be OK. By the way, it really isn't as effective as other types, but does aerate the soil if roto-tilled in.
Reply:just long enough that you wont have a garden full of straw and wheat seedlings, a season would be ideal, but you can do it in less if you put the manure in a heap and turn it over a number of times to kill the seeds
Reply:a good 3 years. Don't mess with horse manure. You'll incinerate your plants.
Reply:about 3 months to be on the safe side. but it depends on what you're growing in the garden
