Is it possible to over-fertilize a vegetable garden?

I admit, I didn't read the packaging and I feel that was a mistake. I spread generous amounts of organic fertilizer over my vegetable garden before the seeds germinated. I've noticed plants have sprouted in areas of less-thick fertilizer. I wonder if the other seeds just haven't come up through the thickness or could the organic fertilizer have killed the seeds.

Is it possible to over-fertilize a vegetable garden?
With some vegetable seeds you need to wait until the seedlings mature before you put down fertilizer. Or fertilize well in advance of planting your seeds.

Reply:Too much nitrogen will burn the plants, and will produce alot of leaves and very few flowers to produce a good crop.
Reply:Yes, it is possible. Roots may be burned. Complexity of humus suffers. Too much nytrogen or other nutriets is toxic for plants. Over-fertilized salads may be dangerous also for health.
