How to grow a veggie garden?
Having a garden is so much fun and LOTS of work so definitely start small the first year.
There are so many options for you.
Where you put your garden is first big choice. The location needs to have at least 6 hours of full sun, good drainage, decent soil, and nice flat surface.
Once you have decided where to put garden you need to figure out how to clear spot. Easy version...use roundup and kill grass, wait for everything to die and rototill area. If you don't have rotottiller and don't have any friends or neighbors who do....you can always check local papers or ask your local greenhouse who tills for people in your area.
Once you have garden tilled let it sit for a couple days before planting. I would add couple bags of compost and rake into soil. You can get at Menards for about $2 per bag.
What kind of vegetables do you want to grow? Some vegetables you can buy the plants like tomato, cucumbers, peppers, squash/zucchini....these are all readily available at any greenhouses, walmart or even grocery stores.
Radish, lettuce/cabbage, carrots, corn, peas and beans will have to be planted with seeds that you can get at any walmart. All these you will have to plant directly in garden.
Potatoes and onions you can buy "sets" which are little bulbs or tubers. You can find these at Walmart or nursery. These you will have to plant directly in ground.
Each vegetable has different planting requirements and you
will find guidance on seed packets or the little tag that comes in 6 packs of plants.
Plant early:potatoes, onions, peas, radishes, lettuce, and carrots.
Plant when temperatures get warmer: tomato, corn, peppers, squash, beans, and cucumbers.
Water in well after planting. Keep area free of weeds. Fertilize with miracle grow about 4-6 weeks. Make sure you plants stay watered. A good rain every 10-14 days be adequate otherwise you will have to hand water.
Here are more tips....Tomato- use tomato cages and put them on early. Cucumbers or Beans or Peas...use fencing or plastic netting to run up. Give squash lots of room to vine.Best to plant on edges of garden.
Also read as much as you can on gardening.Buy yourself a good beginners manual or go to local library and borrow.
There are TONS of websites also available. I listed a couple below that will get you started.
Good luck.
Reply:Make your first garden as easy as possible. Start small and use plants that are easy to grow. Some plants are remarkably easy to grow from seeds and will give the best results. Forget rototilling and all that . Get your feet wet before you try to swim. Go to home depot and buy 2 8 ft. 1 x 6 and have them cut them in half. Buy some #8 finishing nails and enough miracle gro potting mix to fill a 4' x 4' bed. (Probably 6 to 8 bags) buy three bamboo or other type of poles and 1 bag of Kentucky wonder pole beans(greenbeans) Take the stuff home and find a spot in full sun. nail the boards together and fill with potting mix. Wait until after the last chance of frost. Make a tee pee out of the poles in the bed and tie the tops together. At the base of two of the poles plant 3 beans. Do not plant the third pole as you don't want to shade the garden. You cannot stop kentucky wonder beans. They will jump out of the ground and grow up the poles. When tomatoes are available buy (determinate) bush type tomatoes as they are fast and easy. Nothing is an easier than onions . Plant the sets and cut the greens off as they grow for use. The miracle grow mix is pre fertilized, all you have to do is pick the plants and put them in
Reply:Decide what plants you want to grow. What do you like to eat? In the spring, go to your local plant nursery - see what they have available. Some plants are easier to grow by buying plants - some are very very easy just to throw the seeds in the ground - depends what you want to grow.
Since you have to wait for winter to be over anyway, go to the library and grab a big stack of books on vegetable gardening, and look them over. Usually one or two will catch your eye. Spend the winter reading.
In the most simple terms, a veggies garden is:
digging the soil to loosen it up, in a sunny spot.
Plant your veggies.
Pull weeds as they grow.
Water if it doesn't rain.
Watch them grow.
There are tons and tons of details to learn - even after gardening for years and years - there's always more to learn.
I recommend starting small - with just 2 or 3 different kinds. Then add more each year as you learn and become experienced.
Reply:go buy a couple of tomato plants in June and see what happens
