I don't necessarily want to kill them (although I wouldn't feel sad about it if I did!). I am just scared to death of them and their presence makes me scared to work in my garden. Is there a time of day when they are less active, and is there a repellent I can buy to keep them away from me?
How do I keep wasps away from me while I work in my garden and yard?
Wasps are less active at dusk. Here are a few solutions:
take a plastic sandwich bag and place a penny inside it. Fill the bag with water. Use some clothespins to attach the bag to a clothes hanger and hang around your porches, doors, windows and patios. This works for any insects that have "compound eyes". Their eyes trick them into thinking that the bag is a spider's web, and the penny looks like a spider sitting in the web. Or make a home-made trap....take a 2-liter pop/soda bottle and cut the top portion off. Fill it up with sugar water, then place a funnel on top. The wasps/bees will be attracted to it, then go in the funnel and cannot come back out. Or try having a Bounce fabric softener sheet sticking out of your back pocket or close by. I know it keeps bees away but it could work with wasps too. Hope this helps.
Reply:At picnics or BBQ's, slice cucumber slices and lay them around. It keeps bees away. Learned this at the maple syrup booth at our state fair, no bees around. It was really amazing.
I guess if you slice some up and rub on your arms etc it could work
Reply:A bounce sheet in your pocket and/or working in the garden in the early morning or late afternoon when the wasps and bees aren't as active.
Reply:Wasps and hornets are least active very early in the morning. Once the sun warms things up they get more active.
Reply:Find the nest amd spray it. Most likely it's on the eaves of your house.
Reply:the color of you clothing and hats can make a difference...at least thats what ive been told...no blue , red , or yellow hats...
