Also how would cat owners feel if I allowed my dog to come and do there business in there back garden?
Before you ask the inevitable yes I do clean up after my dog when out for a walk which I always take in fields and not on public highways.
What can I grow around the boundaries of my garden to keep out cats?
i agree with you about cats. Personally, i know people who had used small chunks of bath sponge soaked in fish oil, it swells in their belly and you don't see the cat again! But there are powders (garlic smelling) and pellets which act as a deterrent, but not really that good. You could just let your dog out when you see the cat in your garden, they might get the message then.
Reply:Citric peelings work..orange,lime,lemon..or even some commercial citrus scented oils..Some vegetable stands and stores will give you thier overipe citrus fruits for free if you tell them what you want them for..
Reply:I hear that many animals hate the smell of red pepper, so that's a thought. You could sprinkle it around the perimiter of your garden. (bears don't like it either %26amp; here in S.C., that's what people are using in their yards) Moth balls may be a deterrent also. Try it around the perimiter also, but the red pepper, sprinkled around the garden may work better. Buy a big can at the grocery store %26amp; repeat the procedure when needed or after a rain.
Reply:You can buy electronic devices that when the sensor is triggered it emits a high pitch sound that cats dislike,or others let out a jet of water. After a while the local cats will learn not to go for a dump in your garden.
A bit harder to get but lion dung is supposed to work a treat!
Good luck
Reply:The only way I have been able to keep cats out of my garden is to put rocks in the soil. I got some really nice rocks and my garden really looks nice. If you want to plant more flowers if remove rocks.
Good Luck
Reply:i dont know but catnip attracts them so dont listen to that person.
Reply:There is no 100% way. I love cats, but after cleaning up after my dog, then finding (alerted by the SMELL - they don't even appear to bury it any more!) several deposits and crushed seedlings... grrrrrrrrr!
The safest way I keep them off freshly dug earth etc is by scattering chopped lemon, orange peel over the top.
Keeps me healthy too.
Reply:set up a live trap and take them to the pound
Reply:I don't know of any plant that will keep a cat out of the garden. If it's not too large an area, you might try burying some chicken wire or hardware cloth about an inch under the fresh turned soil or mulch. When the cat starts to dig, it hits the wire and tries another spot. Worked for me in my flower garden.
Reply:Catnip? or you can buy cat deterrents from garden centres.
