Are you supposed to rototill a garden when the soil is wet or dry?

and is there anything that i should add to the soil? The soil was used as a garden before, so its not a new garden.

Grab a hand of soil and squeeze it. If it's sticky never till or plow the ground. Wait until the soil brakes up when you squash it in your hands.

If you till when it's sticky you actually mess up the soil structure and when it drys out you will have clumps that are like rocks.

Very dry soil on the other hand will take much more horse power and ware on the plow.

So the best time is when its damp but not sticky.
Reply:dry...mines almost dry enough to hit for the first time...
Reply:Keep in mind you will be walking behind it - and if you till wet, it's mud and that is 1) messy as h_ll - and 2) will dry in hard clumps.

When the soil is moist but not wet is the best - and don't forget to till in some of the leaves you raked out of the yard when you till....good soil fluffer and plant food. If there was a garden there before, the dead plants can be tilled in as well.

If the soil is hard, add some peat (I always do) to fluff it and sometimes I add 1-2 bags of composted manure to make sure the plants will be strong and healthy. Chemicals are only chemicals to a plant, but earthly nutrients are gold!
Reply:Easier when damp
Reply:too wet and it will clump up your tillers blades and is a lot harder to work too dry and your tilling up dust.

moist is good but never wet or soaked so wait afew days after it rains or any time you soil isn't hard-pan
