Can I grow potatoes in my garden?

I have a very small garden in a suburb, about 20' by 60.' It has good sunlight. Most of it is a lawn with a small border full of plants. Is there any chance at all that I could grow enough potatoes to eat so that I don't need to buy them from a supermarket - or is that completely unrealistic, just a pipe dream? I was wondering if I could buy seeds (or whatever it is you have to buy!) and just try growing some potatoes at the end or in a corner...just to keep my bills down and also out of sheer curiousity...

I am the first to admit that I know absolutely nothing about gardening...or farming. If I'm talking b/s please put me out of my misery now...but I just can't help wondering...

Many thanks.

Can I grow potatoes in my garden?
.this is what i do every year..and it works..i go to the store and buy 5 pounds of potatoes and let them sit for awhile and let them grow they eyes then i cute each and every eye out leaving some of the potatoe attached to the eye doesn't take much..then i make a mound of dirt the lenght of my garden and plant the eyes of the potatoe you can pllant them over lapping now big deal cover and water about every 3 or 4 days until they sprout. then water as needed. they will get very tall and beautilful..if you take good care of the plant you wont know when they are ready because the tops will last for ever..in a few months maybe 3 you will want to dig one up to see if it is the size you want..you can also go to a green house and buy starter potatoes which are old potatoes that started sprouting..good luck and enjoy

oh yeah a 5 pound of potatoes will grow 100's of pounds of potatoes..if you do it right..
Reply:GET SOME TATERS AND LET THEM GROW EYES FIRST

ALLOW THEM TO GET ABOUT 1/2 INCH LONG

CUT THEM INTO QUARTERS EACH HAVIND EYES ON IT

TILL UP THE GROUND AND PLACE THE QUARTERS ON THE SOIL JUST PUSHED IN A LITTLE

MAKE A MOUND OVER THEM ALL ALONG THE ROW

THEY WILL GROW FAST

WHEN IT IS TIME TAKE A TINE OR YOUR HANDS AND DIG THEM UP

YOU WILL HAVE A BUNCH

PROBLEM IS THAT THEY WILL NOT KEEP ANY LONGER IN THE CUPBOARD THAN STORE BOUGHT SO IF YOU WANT THEM ALL YEAR YOU WILL BE BACK AT THE STORE IN NO TIME
Reply:you can grow potatoes anywhere just dig a hole put a potatoe in and it will grow the plant grows up and the new potatoes grow underground lots of them when you dig thrm up if you dont get them all they grow again and take all the goodness from tne soil so nothing else grows and youl never get rid off the bastards good luck and make sure you get them all out
Reply:you can try but I won't guarantee that it will work. You just need to save some pototaoes and let them grow the eyes on them...then you can cut them in half and plant them.
Reply:use a potatoe that is starting to grow "eyes" cut it in peices and plant each "eye chunk". I say go for it , what the heck , give it a try.Potatoes grow them selves
Reply:Piece of cake. You can even grow them in a large container like a whiskey barrel. Main thing to remember is to keep "mounding them up" by adding more soil (straw is ok, but not optimum) to the top around the plant.

Any potato will grow from store bought. I've had potatoes grow in the compost pile from peelings thrown in there. So you don't need to plant great huge chunks. Ideally there should be 1 at least eye on the piece you plant.

Don't let them dry out. You will begin to get spudletts when the mother plant begins flowering. May be a little late now to start, but why not!?! good luck
Reply:YES! I just had a very successful potatoe garden, I was so totaly amazed, I don't have much room either so I took two boards 1/2 in thick, 1 1/2 ft X 5 ft (use boards that will fit your area, nothing fancy, I used old boards I found) and two 1 1/2 ft X 3 ft , put them together to make a box(no top or bottom, only sides), I didn't even nail em together, I put medium size rocks all around them to hold them up, it actually made it look better. Then I put a black plastic trash bag %26amp; lay it on the bottom so the weeds didn't grow up thru, and fill it with potting soil and top soil mixture. I read to take and cut the eyes or even the roots growing from some potatoes, I used red and new white potatoes, cut a two in square out around the eye/root let em dry for 24 hrs, I put some in the bottom of the soil about 3 in from the bottom and about 4 in away from each other, two weeks later I planted another layer about 4-6 in up from the bottom layer, and so on until I had my box full, or about 6 in from the top, water each layer you plant, and then when needed. Plants will grow on the top of the soil and you know you have potatoes underneath. In late August I put my hand down deep along one side in the soil and started pulling up white potatoes that were huge, everytime I need some I just go out and pull some out, I got all the huge white and red ones out and still have lots of medium and little ones, %26amp; they can stay in the soil all winter as long as they don't get wait and freeze. I'm so proud.
Reply:You can grow potatoes almost anywhere. They grow in arizona and ireland. I don't know where you are, so can't tell you when to plant them. They can stand cool weather if it doesn't freeze them.

Some potatoes in the store are treated so they won't sprout.

Let them dry for a month or so. They like a temperature cycle it seems The eyes sprout if they will grow.

You may have to go to a garden store. They only seeel them when it is time to plant. cut them in halves or one eye per chunk. plant them about 3" deep with the eyes up. If it is too cold they may not come up til spring. or when the soil warms. If they get too wet for too long they will rot. You can put them on top of the ground and cover with straw about 8" deep if you want. slice an eye off ne let it lay in a dish and see if it sprouts.
