i live in CA and the weather is pretty moderate and consistent all year long. i want to start my garden ASAP and i want to make my own raised bed out of wood and cedar blocks. any tips on which veggies flourish in summer? i have an area picked out in my backyard and it is full sun. my box is going to be small so i dont have room for corn or large veggies. any suggestions would be great!
Any tips on how to start my own veggie garden?
Use human remains...
Alright, I'm only kidding (although there are people who would actually take that advice). The first thing you have to do is pull the weeds out. Next, take a hula hoe (it's a hoe that has a square hole-looking thing on it [It looks like a stick with a square loop.]) and use it to loosen up the dirt. If you really need to loosen up the dirt, use a pickaxe, but be careful (a rotatiller is nice too). The main thing, however, is that the dirt is loose. Think of it this way- If I walked up to you and started to strangle you, would you be able to eat or breathe? Of course not!!! When you plant the seeds, plant the seed 2x its length below the surface of the dirt, so that it gets adequate sunshine and fertilize them (Read the instructions on the fertilizer when you do so.). During the Summer, put bark on top of the dirt. Putting bark on top of the dirt is a way to trap the moisture, which means that you don't have to water the plants as often (and you'll save money in the long run). During the Fall and Winter months, take the bark off and put some sun lamps around them. During the Spring, there shouldn't be any bark or sun lamps at all. I hope that helped.
Reply:start a compond pile, and then get some seeds and some fish!!Honestly, comost, fish and seeds are a great combo for a veggie garden.
Reply:tomatoes, cilantro, peppers, basil, and plenty of other herbs. good luck!
Reply:Try tomatoes , beans , peas, I would plant anything that would help on cost of buying food. Anything you use the most of, that is not invasive to grow.
Reply:um, i'm only twelve but here goes. we have a really small veggie garden at my house. it has parsley, which is doing really great.
Reply:If you want your garden to look professional you might need Little help. I would plant small herbs like basil and carrots and cilantro. Stuff like that. If you plant basil, it would look good if you plant the purple basil and green basil side by side. Just for looks:) Plant the tallest plants in the back so your garden looks 3 dimensional. And thats a good idea to have the raised bed but if u think that weeds won't get in, your so wrong! lol. They are airbone weeds that travel till they land. So I suggest you tend to your garden as often as you would a regular, ground garden. If you need any help designing it I would love for you to give me an email. Happy Planting!!
