we have an abundance of blackberry bushes in our garden and they are a pain! how do we get rid of them and their roots?
How can i get rid of blackberry bushes in my garden permenantly?
Root Out, one of the best on the market, to kill off unwanted tree roots, brambles etc.
We used it on ivy growing up our house, chopped it down to the base nr the soil level, sprinkled it on, covered it with strong plastic to stop rain and wildlife being affected - and left it! Killed it right down to the deep roots (10yrs old).
The good thing is that it becomes beneficial to the soil - thus being a plus for the environment!
If the base of the bushes are large, drill holes into them and put the granules in there - it also speeds up the process - which can take a while depending on the age of the shrubs.
Reply:Blackberry bushes are vigorous growers and the best way to stop them growing is to dig deep down to find it's roots and cut off.
Reply:what you need is no ordinary weed killer but a product called brushwood killer. this is a systemic killer which means it is soaked up through the leaves and is absorbed into the roots. be carful when using as if it touches any other plant life it will als have the same effect. it is usually safe to replant in treated area after about 6 weeks.
Reply:Move to a high rise
Reply:You will have to dig the bushes out and dig down about 240mm to get all the roots out, then treat the ground with a powerful weedkiller and leave for about 2 months before replanting.
Reply:Tilling the garden every year will help, but birds will occassionally deposit seeds so nothing will permanently keep them out.
Reply:Yeh i too have the same problem and it grows like a snake in my garden and i am gonna buy a weed killer and try it.
Reply:Me too. I just keep digging them up but they put out shoots from the fields and come back. Haven't found anything permanent yet but there are less than there were.
Reply:i would first put an ad on craigslist or in your local ppr to offer if anyone wants them to come dig them up on x date.
if they are still there after x date... get a total vegitation killer from lowes walmart... that sort of place. cut them down and spray the total veg killer on them. it takes about a week but should kill them off.
then till the ground to break up the root system to make sure they are good n dead.
shame you don't live near by or i'd take them- i looooove black berries
Reply:Cut them down.
Root them out.
Rototil
Reply:You need a product containing MCPA 24D-T it's sold in the garden centres as brushwood killer. Be very careful that you follow ALL the instructions on the label as it is very nasty stuff.
Alternatively just keep digging up as much of the roots as you can manage, eventually they will get the hint and die.
