Is there a plant I could plant in my front garden to deter dogs from coning in?

I have a problem in that I keep finding dog pooh in the garden. I can't afford to have a gate fitted at the moment. I wondered if there is a plant whose smell dogs find noxious, which would make them go away.

not necessarily a plant..but you can use a spice like cayenne pepper to keep them out. The capzasin in the spice will deter them from re-entering your yard. just sprinkle some around the base of your plants..it is perfectly harmless to the plants and the dog.
Reply:A guy I knew had the same problem, he went to the zoo and got a bag of lion poo mixed with pee, and spread it between the plants. WAR OVER !!

He lived near a zoo in Belfast. N I
Reply:Just recently a garden plant has been developed called Coleus Canina that cats, dogs and even foxes will avoid.

Coleus Canina - an effective cat deterrent

Coleus Canina is also known as the "Pee-off plant" or the "Scaredy Cat" coleus

This attractive Coleus has excellent foliage and small, attractive spikes of blue flowers in the summer. It releases a stench that cats just can’t stand. Thankfully it only smells to the human nose when touched! Could this be the solution to your feline intruder problems you’ve been longing for? The plant is an annual, but can easily be propagated and cuttings kept in a frost-free place over winter. Plants need to be established before the smell is released. They need to be in drier rather than wet soil and planted every 1-2 yards

Reply:Keep a big piece of meat with rat poison on in the garden;I found it works on cats so it should work with dogs ,you never see them again
Reply:An acre of cacti.
Reply:Let them hike a leg up to a cactus. That should do it.
Reply:There was this film called 'Quatermass Experiment........
Reply:I have to go with what Franchis said. Even this may be ineffective. We, as humans, know how it is to be in a room full of people and noise. We might pay attention to a word or voice that gets our attention. But otherwise, we block everything out. A dog's sense of smell is similar. It smells everything in the air, but only pays attention to those odors of interest. A bad smell in the garden may be blocked out mentally, in favor of some other interest on your property. The fence, when affordable, is the best solution.
