What's the best way of removing ants from my garden lawn?

An ant mound is slowly accumulating on my garden lawn. Looks unsightly, thinning the grass and preventing comfortable sunbathing! I'd like to remove the ants - preferably relatively humanly. Any ideas?

They are actually *good* for lawns. They aerate the soil.



Whenever a mound gets too close to my house, I just stomp it as I'm mowing ... they usually relocate further away.

Reply:buy the ant killer called "nip-on". they take it into the nest and it kills the queen.

Reply:During the 4th of july my son and I rid our prob with ants. we linked firecrackers together and blew them up. this did create a good sized hole..but the ants are gone must have gotten the queen and grass is growing again.

Reply:There is no humane way of moving ants. You need to use a quality ant killer. If you use ant powder it leaves a white dust all over the place, while liquid spray has in my experience a tendency to cause more damage to the plant life then the ants. That said they are both effective methods. Personally, I think it's best to use the ant traps which are like little domes with four entrances to it. The ants walk in and then leave carrying the killing agent with them.



It's a fallacy to say that they take it to the heart of the nest and it kills the queen and that's the end of the problem. The poisoned ant very rarely makes it back to the centre of the nest and the queen along with all of the eggs are moved to a safer place with military precision by an entire army of ants who are there to defend her.



So all you are effectively doing is killing some of them, but the bulk will move out and find somewhere else to build a nest. Then you have to start the entire cycle all over again, only in a different part of the garden.
