What is the best way to get rid of standing water in the garden?

I live on clay soil and the drainage from the garden is poor. When it rains the rainwater collects on a section of patio halfway down the garden. There is a soakaway there already but it takes along time for it to clear the water (3 days). I have tried clearing out the soakaway, it did make it better at clearing the water but it still takes too long. Is there a way to pump the water 20 metres into a drain (which runs into the road) or is it best to build another soakaway. I await your responses. Thanks in advance.

i just spent about five hours digging a trench and holes around my grandmothers garden for drainage. I threw the dirt back on the garden in an attempt to build it up a little higher. I dont know if it worked or not, the ground is frozen and covered with snow right now. I doubt you want to invest in a noisy pump and pipes, but it could be done that way of course.
Reply:Hard to say without knowing what sort of terrain you have. You could dig a trench to where you want the water to go. Dig it a few inches below your gardens usable soil, lay a plastic drain tile pipe in it, and cover it with three or four inches of gravel. After you put the top soil back over it all your garden shouldn't have standing water for more than a few minutes.
