How do you keep squirrels out of newly planted garden?

They get in the garden and pull up the shoots that have sprouted up. Have the shoots all over the place and they have eaten the seeds.

How do you keep squirrels out of newly planted garden?
I had to start my veggies indoors for the same reason.

If you can't do that, then use a clear tarp to create a tent over the plants. They'll also germinate faster in their little "greenhouse". Once they've got their first or second set of true leaves, remove the tent. IME, the squirrels won't bother them once the first or second set of leaves is in.
Reply:No matter what you do, the squirrels will find a way to get to whatever they want. They are rodents...no better than rats and mice, only cuter...and smarter. I've battled them for years, trying to keep them out of my birdfeeders and to keep them from digging up new plants. When they see freshly dug soil, they want to know what's under it. You might try putting bark mulch around the seedlings, once they appear. They aren't too fond of digging in bark or wet soil. Good luck. You'll need it.
Reply:As I wouldn't want to deal with disposing of dead squirrels in my yard (or live ones in a trap) I recommend a distraction until your plants are a little bigger. Try a squirrel feeder with dried corn on the oposite side of your yard from your garden. If you keep it stocked, it should keep the squirrels happy. Once your plants mature a little the squirrels shouldn't bother them. Now if you have DEER... well, I'd just let the squirrels eat the garden and plan to go to the farmer's market! ;-)
Reply:out of newly planted garden? I'd be so pissed I would freaking shoot them there would be no Mercy death to squirrels..........
Reply:Put some walnuts with poison in them. It's brutal but highly effective.

*As of course you DO know that animals have NO feelings what so ever...
Reply:Best Bet... Get a cat!!! :-)

Mine dose all the work for our garden and our niebors have never been more happy w/ their plants %26amp; gardens this year since we moved in ...
Reply:You can try a floating row cover and secure it to the ground. It kept the birds from eating my seeds.

Reply:I too had a squirrel problem until I bought a squirrel feeder and put it on a landscape post in a FAR corner of my yard. I fill it with black-oil sunflower seeds. Now the squirrels (for the past year) have never ventured into my yard past their feeder. It hasn't attracted more squirrels, just the ones that already lived there.
