How can i discourage cats from coming in my garden?

All the local cats like to use my garden as their toilet and i cought my son putting it in his mouth once. It makes me so mad. Obviously i don't want to hurt them but i wondered if anyone knew any tactics to get them to bog off for good.



I can't do anything to the fencing as it is rented property.

YES go to B%26amp;Q and get yourself some cat and dog pepper. u can use household pepper but you tend to not buy the excess for household use. You can buy a whole plastic container of it, it deters cats and it doesnt hurt them. just makes then sneeze for a bit! ;)

Reply:I heard of the mothball idea too but if your child is putting things in his mouth, that is not a good idea because mothballs are poison.

I made up a mixture of vinegar , chillis and garlic and let it sit for awhile in a jar with a lid. It doesn't matter the amounts as all the ingredients repell cats. Then punch holes in the lid and sprinkle it on the area you want the cats to avoid. It does work but it stinks while you are applying it. I found that it will wear out or disolve when it rains and has to be done over. I found this in one of my gardening books. Good luck. I believe cats should all be indoor cats because they are a nuisance to their neighbors.
Reply:I sprinkle cayanne pepper or chili powder in the garden. (cheap stuff from a Dollar store). You can also make it "uncomfortable" for the cats. Plastic forks stuck into the ground (prongs upward) or pinecones spread on the surface. These all work for me.

You can buy a commercial product called "Scent Off"

Try the orange peel sugestion - cats don't like citrus.
Reply:Orange peel or pepper will work. Or you could keep a filled water pistol handy %26amp; squirt water at any cat that comes in. It won't hurt the cats but it will deter them.
Reply:I've read that mothballs do the trick, but haven't tried it myself -- just spread them around in the bed and it'll keep critters out.

Reply:Glad to hear that you wish them no harm. They are beautiful creatures. Have you thought of getting a cat yourself? Preferbly male. Failing that a big bad dog. Also try getting hold of some lion dung (seriously) it scares the living daylights out of them. Good luck.
Reply:put your used coffee grouts on your garden where the cats go ,it worked on my garden i no longer have that problem
Reply:get a cat yourself ..go down the rspca and get a big tom cat that still got his meat and veg .you have no more probs with cat poo again
Reply:Try putting rocks or big clumpy mulch in your garden beds to discourage digging. If they can't dig, they'll go somewhere else.
